Hot Tub Maintenance Tips – Keep Your Spa Clean and Safe

Maintaining your hot tub properly is essential for long-lasting performance and clean, safe water. Here are my expert recommendations for effective hot tub care:

1. Avoid Bromine Tablets

I do not recommend bromine tablets. They are highly corrosive to spa components if not used correctly and are challenging to regulate.

2. Weekly Chlorine Treatment

Use 1/4 cup of sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dehydrate (commonly referred to as Shock or Chlorine Granules) once a week.

  • You can find this at your local pool supply store.
  • Important: Avoid buying from Walmart, Lowe’s, or Home Depot, as their products may differ chemically.

If you use your hot tub daily, increase this treatment to twice a week. After a hot tub party with lots of guests, add 1/2 cup of chlorine granules to the water to ensure cleanliness.

3. Monthly pH Balancing

Add 1/2 cup of pH Increaser (pH UP) once a month to maintain optimal pH levels.

4. Addressing Cloudy or Smelly Water

If your hot tub water becomes cloudy or smells unpleasant (like old mop water):

  • Add 1/2 cup of chlorine granules.
  • Wait 12 hours for the water to clear before using the hot tub again.

5. Filter Maintenance

Rinse your hot tub filters thoroughly with a water hose once a month to remove debris and ensure proper water circulation.

6. Optional Chemicals for Advanced Maintenance

For additional freshness, fragrance, and water quality:

  • Consider using chemicals for scale prevention, metal removal, or special fragrances.
  • Visit your local pool supply store for guidance and water testing services.

7. Test Strips for Monitoring

Pick up test strips for free chlorine if you want to closely monitor your water's chemical balance.

Pro Tip: Regular maintenance not only keeps your hot tub water crystal clear but also prolongs the life of your spa components. Following these simple steps will help you enjoy a clean, safe, and relaxing spa experience year-round!
